Cold Calling Is Dead And Social Selling Is The Future
Yes that is right I said the words that every fan of Glenn Gary Glenn Ross hate, cold calling is dead. It is gone and done and if you are in denial of it you are not using technology. The new industrial revolution is here and it is called the fourth industrial revolution and the death of the "middleman", which I will talk about more in a later article. Now though we are talking about the old art of cold calling and the hard sellers out there that frankly are behind the times. This doesn't mean that you don't need confidence to sell anymore that is far from the truth it's just that the old pushy way of doing things is the way of the dinosaur.
Let us start with the advancement of technology and the world wide web as the start of this basis. Salesmen and women have been a crucial part of any business since the dawn of business the only thing that has changed is how they sold. In our lifetime and the advancement of technology with phones and infrastructure we have known mostly the art of cold calling. It has been ingrained in us for a very long time and almost all sale pundits out there teach this art in their own way. Every fabric of our being in sales is about the art of the cold call and achieving sales through it. The reason why is because it was the first advancement away from foot traffic and physically hunting people down or having to mail a letter that people could easily discard. It was a true advancement in sales because you could build an instant interaction with another person not within arms reach therefore drastically increasing your sales potential by interacting with more people on a daily basis. You weren't restricted to just people within arms reach anymore.
Now comes the age of the internet and the dot com bubble of 2001. All this technology and people saying it will make money and no one or very few actually could turn a profit. It destroyed the way people looked at technology as they thought it was something that wasn't profitable. My how has the tables have turned with technology, it is quickly becoming the most efficient way to not only monetization but too monetize ANY business. We got here through simple innovations such as social media, Amazon and the growth of Google. All these products have figured out a footing and massive audience size in order to generate revenue.
So with this very albeit brief history lesson where does this leave the death of the cold call? It is in the fact that social media and the streamlining of technology has now created a more efficient, wider and more detailed experience for selling. Just like the phone enabled more time efficiency for selling, social media has now made more efficient use of your time. You can specifically target your customers and in most cases you have a detailed picture of what your customer actually likes with their experiences. You can build a relationship with your customer and them you. Your customer can actually see you and identify with you the seller. It allows for you to have a mutual connection and allow you to build your consumer base organically and as rapidly as one post.
This is why cold calling is dead because the pushy style of selling doesn't work anymore. The millennial generation has learned to build trust through social media and identifying what works through their relationships on social media. Your brand and your message on social media is all right there for them to see unlike cold calling where there is no face, name or common ground just forceful selling. The newest version of cold calling is the DM (direct messaging) which allows you to contact your consumer directly and again they can see all about your brand and choose to follow you if that need and common ground is there.
So if you are cold calling start getting on social media and sending out those DM's. It is where selling will be five years from now and beyond. If you are thinking about paying any amount of money with a comma in the number for a sales course about cold calling start looking at social media for free first. There are so many more avenues for success through social selling then cold calling, make the most efficient use of your time and start social selling.
